Gawad Urian 2016 Airs on Cinema One June 22

If you want to catch all the awards action and those lovely acceptance speeches, tune in at 9PM as Cinema One brings to television screens the airing of the 39th Gawad Urian where the brightest and most talented artists from Philippine cinema come together in celebration of the best performances and movies of the previous year this Wednesday, June 22.

Big performances from the Crystal Voice of Asia Sheryn Regis, The Voice finalist Daryl Ong, power-belter Jona, and rising diva Morisette can be anticipated at this year’s Gawad Urian to pay tribute to this year’s Natatanging Gawad Urian recipient, Mr. Romy Vitug.

Aside from the much-awaited performances, viewers will get to witness which among the drama films Heneral Luna, Taklub, Anino sa Likod ng Buwan, Honor Thy Father, Imbisibol, Ari: My Life with a King, Bambanti, and Da Dog Show will bring home the much coveted Best Picture for this year’s Gawad Urian.

Leading the nominees with 10 nominations including Best Picture and Best Direction are Erik Matti’s “Honor Thy Father” starring John Lloyd Cruz and Ralston Jover’s “Da Dog Show” starring Mercedes Cabral. Both starring actors are also nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress.

The race is tight in the major categories as well including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress since the nominees have received critical reviews for their notable performances.

The 39th Gawad Urian has marked a lot of “firsts” this year as John Lloyd Cruz got double nominations for Best Actor for his films “Honor Thy Father” and “A Second Chance” and Jennylyn Mercado got her first Best Actress nomination for the film “Walang Forever.”

Hosted by Iza Calzado, Zoren Legaspi, and Butch Francisco, the 39th Gawad Urian will be held on June 22, 2016 at the Kia Theater and will be aired on Cinema One at 9PM of the same night.

The Gawad Urian is the most esteemed film awards in the Philiippines. The nominees and winners are chosen by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP), a group that is composed of reputable pillars in Philippine cinema.

The MPP members are President Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, Dr. Nic Tiongson, Professor Tito Valiente, Mario Hernando, Dr. Rolando Tolentino, Butch Francisco, Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, Miguel Rapatan, Dr. Benilda Santos, and Lito Zulueta.
