GMA’s ‘Encantadia’ Poses a Threat to ABS-CBN’s ‘Ang Probinsyano’
Since the release of the official trailer of the highly-anticipated requel of GMA Network’s “Encantadia,” netizens have been abuzzed on the high production value that the producers set for the show. In 2005, it was dubbed as the grandest, most ambitious, and most expensive production for Philippine television and it ruled the ratings game. This year, the Kapuso Network will make an attempt to surpass the original feat and shake primetime viewership.
The new “Encantadia” starring Gabbi Garcia, Sanya Lopez, Kylie Padilla, and Glaiza de Castro, however, will be pitted against the country’s most-watched program–“FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.” As of the moment and for almost one year now, the Coco Martin-starrer is the only TV program consistent in garnering above 40 percent in Kantar Media’s National TV Ratings. But of course, we can’t expect “Encantadia” to do the same as we all know that GMA Network’s stronghold is Mega Manila and for a new show to hit 40% instantly is as close to impossible.
But the question is, can “Encantadia” produce a tremor in Philippine primetime viewership by bringing “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” down from the 40% bracket? If the Kapuso telefantasya can do this, then the show really is a threat to ABS-CBN’s primetime dominance.
