Original Comedy Play ‘Super Nerda’ to Hit the Stage this Feb

A not-so-typical super heroine is hitting Thomasian theater this February as Mediartrix, the university wide musical theater organization of the University of Santo Tomas, presents the variety musical comedy “Super Nerda” which promises to offer viewers a “super laugh trip” experience.
“It will be a super laugh trip viewing experience indeed because we will show you a spontaneous type of comedy on stage. We have our scripts as guide so as to keep the story on track, but the actors can pretty much do the adlibs that they want so it can really get crazy up there. Even I might be surprised with what they will do or say,” explained scriptwriter and director Jan Kristoffer Enriquez.

“It’s like fusing stand-up comedy to a narrative that is very much relatable to our young audience. We researched on what is ‘uso,’ what kind of humor they have now, what would tickle their minds, what would they usually say or do in various situations, and applied it in our scenes,” he added.

When asked how “Super Nerda” was conceptualized, Enriquez said that it came from a simple idea that basically challenges the superhero stereotype.

“We are all used to seeing gorgeous, mesmerizing, and tough-looking superheroes like Superman, Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, and even locally, with Darna and Captain Barbell. So my boss, Kane Errol Choa, challenged this stereotype and thought of a character that is different from the rest— a beautiful woman who transforms into a small, nerdy looking superhero,” he said.

From a simple caricature drawn by Choa on a piece of paper, “Super Nerda” is now a full length stage play that is set to entertain both Thomasian and non-Thomasian audiences this love month.

“Super Nerda” tells the story of Verna, a beautiful but not so smart young woman who wants nothing but to make her parents proud of her. She mysteriously gets a magical underwear that transforms her to the confidently GGSS (gandang ganda sa sarili), nerdy looking, and not-your-typical super heroine, Super Nerda.

For her to get her heart’s desires, she must save three innocent lives from danger. In order for her to do this, Mamshie, a middle aged lady who also possess super powers, guides Verna all throughout her journey and helps her become the hero she is destined to be.

Will she be able to fulfill her mission? Will she sacrifice her own happiness just to save the man of her dreams?

“Super Nerda” is topbilled by Mediartrix alumna Lhen Hasal with Anjo Soriano, Gladys Pagdato, Chris Azarraga, Rafael Fadriga, Euri Camus, Stephanie Dela Torre Raquel, Nicole Evangelista, April Verona, Angelica Alonzo, Jaz Villa, Eco Dela Sala, Paulo Caparas, Daniel Sagun, Marty Agustin, Marcus Banag, Wilda Atienza, Christian Calungsod, G Lampa, Mavic Ampil, and Bianca Ballesteros.

The production team is led by production manager Gerard Lampa, creative director Juan Carlos Pizarro, technical director John Michael Felismino, and stage managers Ruth Belano and Rye Dale Garcia.
