The Latin American country won Miss Universe only once courtesy of Luz Marina Zuluaga in 1958 while the Philippines have won twice already (1969 – Gloria Diaz and 1973 – Margie Moran).
According to various pageant websites and blogs, the futuristic D.I.C. crown is going to be contested by Mary Jean and Paulina, Misses Philippines and Colombia, respectively. The two candidates scored very well in the preliminaries and share a number of things in common like their catwalk prowess, their toned physique and both delivered engaging interviews. And most importantly, you need to know that their evening gowns were created by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza, a friend of Stella Araneta and being consigned by the latter to create national costumes and evening gowns for the Philippine representatives since 2001.
We have to admit, Paulina’s evening gown is elegant while MJ’s evening gown is very costum-y. Some netizens call it more of a bridal dress than an evening gown. But why do we have to hire a foreign designer to create the costumes and gowns that our representatives will wear? We have so many talented local designers and immensely popular Filipino designers abroad that can dress our candidates in the first place. Just like what happened to Janine in 2012 (A popular US website called her gown the worst of the year), MJ may have to settle for at least first runner-up placement if she makes it to Top 5.
