Lyca Gairanod Triumphs as 1st Grand Champion of ‘The Voice Kids Philippines’

Nine-year-old Lyca Gairanod of Cavite, aka "Lyca Superstar," emerged as the first ever grand champion of “The Voice Kids” after garnering the highest percentage of text and online votes during the two-night finale of the top-rating and Twitter-trending singing-reality show.

Coach Sarah Geronimo’s bet led the public voting based on the Power Ballad, Upbeat Song, and Special Performance with a Celebrity Guest rounds and took home P1 million, a one-year recording contract with MCA Universal, house and lot, a home appliance showcase, a musical instrument showcase, and P1 million worth of trust fund.

Team Sarah’s Darren Espanto came in second, while Team Bamboo’s Juan Karlos Labajo and Team Lea’s Darlene Vibares placed third and fourth, respectively.

Lyca impressed the coaches and the audience with her rendition of Regine Velasquez’ “Narito Ako” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” Saturday night (July 26), but what brought the house down was her version of “Basang Basa sa Ulan,” which she performed with band Aegis on Sunday (July 27), earning a standing ovation from coaches Lea Salonga, Bamboo, and the audience at Resorts World Manila.

Even before “The Voice Kids” started airing, Lyca had already made a mark on netizens and viewers with her blind audition performance of Aegis’ “Halik,” which was used as a teaser for the program and became a viral hit.

As she fought through the Battle Rounds, Sing-Offs, and Live Semi-Finals, Lyca was dubbed the “little superstar” after she was likened by coach Lea to Nora Aunor. Lyca, a small kid with big dreams, became known for her heartfelt performances and humble background as a daughter of a fisherman who sometimes helps her mother scavenge junk to sell. Lyca also previously revealed that she would perform for her neighbors in exchange for cash or food.

Netizens also tuned in to Sunday show to wait for the announcement of the grand champion, as #TheVoiceKidsChampion, #TVKDarrenForTheChampion, #WowAngGwapoNiLuis, Jhong Hilario, Lani Misalucha, Gary V and JK, You Are My Song, and other finale-related hashtags trended worldwide and locally on Twitter.

The star-studded Sunday finale, hosted by Luis Manzano and Alex Gonzaga, also featured performances from Darren and Martin Nievera, Juan Karlos and Gary Valenciano, and Darlene and Lani Misalucha. It was opened by a lively performance from the Final Four young artists, the three coaches, and “The Voice of the Philippines” Season 1 grand winner Mitoy and finalists Klarisse de Guzman, Myk Perez, and Janice Javier.

Since its pilot, “The Voice Kids” has consistently ranked as the most watched program in the country, and recorded its all-time high national TV rating of 37.6% last June 8.

    I like Lyca hindi cya binoto ng taong bayan dahil lan sa stado nya sa buhay…. ako ito ang masasabi ko hindi sa taas ng boses mo maa apreciate ang isang awiting tama ang sabi ng iba ipikit mo ang mata mo ang pakingan mo ang awiting ng apat kon cno ang aantig sa puso mo c lyca yon kya cya ang binoto ng taong bayan at saka wag yon sasabihin na parang kalakal kon pano hawakan ni lyca ang trophy nya mas mukha kan kalakal dahil wala kan respeto sa tao igalang nyo lan ang gusto ng sambayanan

    darren kayo hindi binuto ng mga tao kaya boom boom panis… hindi type ang bosis n darren ng mga tao gusto nila s lyca….. wala kaayo magawa tapos na s lyca ang nanalo.yaw mo pamugos n sa darren mdaug yabag na ug tingug mao wala ka daug….
    wala gani nanimaho sa canada dre kaha kalouy pud tawon….

    @chris… alam naman nating lahat ang masang pinoy malapit sa less fortunate lalo n yung may talent gaya ni lyca. And totally agree c lyka kuha nya vote ng tao kung basis sa status ng buhay. Ang pinoy p naman mahilig sa nakakaiyak n drama ng buhay but don’t get me wrong I really adore lyka kasi sa kabila ng status nya sa buhay nagamit nya talent nya. Para lang sa ibang tao hindi status ang tinignan kundi boses. Kung lahat sana sila inanonymous ang buhay at binasehan yung quality ng boses, who do you think would win? Try to close your eyes ang just listen sa mga boses nila. Saken top three ay sila darren, jk and eddray…. opinion lang 🙂

    Darren truly deserve the title though lyca indeed deserve the prizes… that’s it. No offense to lyca and to her follower. She indeed has a quality of voice. This is not a matter of education, you’re life status. It’s about the voice quality during your performance. Dapat hindi lang votes ang naging basis kasi it can be manipulated. Sana 50%from text and online votes and 50%from the judges or votes from the professional singers. But happy naren ako for lyca kasi she really deserves to have a good life….

    If I will put it this way, deserving talaga si Lyca manalo ng 1 million , house and a lot, 1 million trust fund..

    But Darren really deserves the trophy!

    I voted for Darren Pero tapos na eh hahahaha…But I’m just so happy for Lyca na at least she will have a better life from now on..

    Hindi naman kasi ito contest tungkol sa pinakamahirap.
    Contest ito tungkol sa pinakamahusay sa pagkanta.
    Alam nman ng lahat na kung kantahan at sayawan lang, malayo ng husay ni darren sa galing ni lyca.
