One Minute Movie Review: ‘The Descendants’

"The Descendants" is a powerful drama about a man struggling to come to terms with the death and betrayal of his wife.

Director: Alexander Payne
Genre: Drama, Comedy
Released By: Warner Bros. for 20th Century Fox
MTRCB Rating: R-13
Opening Date: February 15, 2012

Gist: After his wife is put on life support following a boating accident, a Hawaiian land baron is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future. He tries to reconnect with his two daughters on a trip across the islands, all the while heading towards a confrontation with his wife’s lover.

The Positive: Payne’s strong character build-up combined with the intellectual penetration of the film’s screenplay makes the story-telling of the beloved Hemmings’ novel about family dysfunction in Hawaii so much engaging, moving and unexpectedly humorous at times. Never thought George Clooney can pull off a deeply emotional and complex character, but he did, with such control and balance that an Oscar Best Actor trophy is already in the bag.

The Negative: Too bad this “family” movie is restricted to kids 13 years old and below because of the abundance of crude language deemed necessary in the story.
