FROM TEEN QUEEN TO A FINE WOMAN
Much has changed over the years, especially for Kathryn Bernardo who first started her career at seven years old when she appeared as Cielo on ABS-CBN’s It Might Be You. From simply seeking fun on the studio set as a child, Kathryn’s dreams have grown, with her wanting to make it big to the silverscreen.
Like other aspiring actresses of her generation, she was willing to take on any project and put in the extra hours, a plea to destiny that she was willing to do more than what was expected to make it in the industry. Her faith and hard work was rewarded with roles that eventually led her to a breakout role in Mara Clara. Playing opposite Julia Montes, Kathryn showed off her gift as a dramatic actress, imbuing innocence and strength in the role originally taken on by Judy Ann Santos. Like her esteemed predecessor, Kathryn established herself as a true talent, who despite her young age had the gravitas to bring to life a compelling character. She shone and became a certified star.
The success of the top-rated teleserye convinced Star Cinema to sign Kathryn on for a two-picture contract. Way Back Home became her first feature film with Julia Montes. At just 15 years old, Kathryn carried the burden of the film on her shoulders. The movie, to say the least, was an utterly overwhelming yet thrilling project for the aspiring actress.
The film was only shown in cinemas for two weeks giving way to another Star Cinema films, but it landed in first place with P18 million within its first week. Soon, what followed was a slew of teleseryes and films for Kathryn, which further cemented her status as a teen queen. Exploring her leading lady potential, Kathryn was matched with several actors with hopes of finding the new “John Lloyd and Bea Alonzo.”
Her chemistry was tested with Kristoffer Martin, Albie Casiño, Khalil Ramos and Enrique Gil, but it was with Daniel Padilla that true showbiz magic was found.
