‘The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition’ Contestants Inspire Sharon Cuneta to Slim Down

“The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition,” the newest offering from reality show capital ABS-CBN, has proven to be a heavyweight not just in the ratings game but also in the hearts of viewers.

The show even became a top trending topic in Twitter during its pilot airing with people tweeting their sentiments as they were touched if not inspired by the stories and determination of the contestants.

After posting a rating of 20.5 percent on its premiere telecast based on the national TV ratings from Kantar Media last Monday (May 30), the Sharon Cuneta-hosted reality show has consistently crushed competition and entered the top five TV programs in the country on a daily basis.

More importantly, the inspiring stories of the 14 “Bigating Pinoy” contestants have moved viewers, even Sharon herself.

When the Megastar first met the contestants, who from being 12 became 14 after an early twist in the competition, they felt star-struck and were at loss for words. But the scenes during the recent weigh-in would show the iconic singer-actress was just as at awe and honored to have met them.

Obviously fighting tears, Sharon made a surprising revelation while the contestants lined up to find out their starting weight.

“I had a midlife crisis. I was very angry. ‘Cause I was everybody’s sweetheart all of a sudden I turned a year older, everybody changed. And I lost all desire to look good,” she bravely said.

But after seeing the determination of the 14 to face the truth about their condition and their determination to transform their lives, Sharon regained faith in herself to change for the better.

“Thank you for making me feel this. I will work hard to slim down and get back in shape,” she said.

Her encouragements and own sharing created an impact on the 14—Alan, Art, Eboy, Eric, JM, Larry, Raffy, Ryan, Angela, Destiny, Edden, Joy, Hazel, at Winwin—because she made them feel they have one more ally in their journey.

Winwin said she feels at home in the camp, because they have someone who understands them and really cares for them. Raffy also said that his respect for the revered actress even grew higher.

The contestants weren’t the only ones positively affected by Sharon’s approach as a host.

Wilbur Ryan Serrano said in Twitter, “I feel yung sincerity ni #sharoncuneta sa mga @BLPinoyEdition ..if theres a will..theres a way…go go go!!”

In the popular forum Pinoyexchange izzzzzlaw also posted “gusto ko maghost dito si ate shawie kase may sympathy sya sa mga contstants , at nagmomotivate sa kanila..”

The people behind the program, meanwhile, hope that while viewers continue to support the program, they also begin transforming their own lives, even if it’s not obesity they have to fight.

On the coming days, they will get to see more action as the trainers Jim Saret and Chinggay Andrada begin the rigorous training for their respective teams. Using different methods, the two are wasting no time in getting the contestants to lose as much weight in time for the weigh-in next week. After all, the group with the lesser average percentage of weight-loss will have to pick one member from their team to oust in the show.

Which “Bigating Pinoy” will fall first and which team will win the challenges with game master Derek Ramsay?

Don’t miss the exciting developments in the reality show that will bring big changes to the lives of every Filipino, “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition,” Monday to Friday on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida.

  1. BS-CBN’s remake of the 90s classic soap opera “Mara Clara” is set to compete in Canada’s 2011 Banff World Media Festival in June.

According to Banff’s official website, “Mara Clara” is one of the two Asian nominees in the Telenovelas & Soap Operas category, pitted against South Korea’s “Bread, Love and Dreams,” popularly known locally as GMA 7’s “Baker King.”

Aside from “Bread, Love and Dreams,” “Mara Clara” will be up against the United Kingdom’s “Coronation Street”; and the USA’s “Days of Our Lives,” “Eva Luna” and “The Queen of the South” in the same category.

  2. Top 10 Most Memorable Teleseryes
Teleseryes have been part of Filipino culture and tradition since Hiwaga sa Bahay na Bato was aired in 1963. With their themes of love, justice, revenge and hope, teleseryes utterly capture the imagination of the Filipino masses, who are drawn to the complicated, sometimes unreal, stories of the characters. Although many of the plots are obviously rehashed and scenes preposterous or predictable, they still keep many glued to the screen, perhaps drawing inspiration. And so we present some of the most memorable teleseryes to have ever aired in television:

    Pangako Sa’Yo
Pangako Sa’yo was actually the first to officially coined the term ‘teleserye.’ It had 480 episodes, shown weeknights during primetime. In no time it became a sensation, topping the ratings for two and a half years. Although both were already known, this series lifted Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa’s popularity to greater heights. They became famous in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and China where Pangako Sa’Yo was a hit. The story is actually run-of-the-mill: a love affair between two people separated by class and wealth. Its subplots, however, made it worth watching, revealing tangled mysteries behind the story. These were complemented by superb performances by the cast.

    Anna Luna
Anna Luna was the first of many teleseryes that ABS-CBN launched in the 1990s. The producers used unknown actors in the beginning because of limited budget. The network was not optimistic about the show’s success; but it became a commercial and critical hit, and the plot was stretched to prolong the show. It was about the struggle of Anna Luna (played by Margarita Fuentes) and her mother (Beverly Vergel) to be reunited after a tragedy separated them. It aired in 1988 during afternoons at 2.

    Mara Clara
Mara Clara is probably the most popular teleserye of the past 20 years. This can be attributed to the main cast which included drama princess Judy Ann Santos and Gladys Reyes who easily became the most hated villain at the time. Aired from 1992 to 1997, Mara Clara was the longest teleserye in Philippine television. It was so popular that it was turned into a movie in 1996 under Star Cinema. The series is about two girls who, by a twist of fate, each lead the life that should have been the other’s, and only a diary can put an end to the mess. The conflict between the two protagonists, Mara del Valle (Judy Ann Santos) and Clara Davis (Gladys Reyes) influenced the acting styles for heroines and villains for years to come.

    Saan Ka Man Naroroon
After the success of Mula sa Puso, Claudine Barreto starred again in this memorable teleserye with the late Rico Yan. The teleserye was a success, praised for its unconventional plot involving three characters played by one actress. It tells the story of triplets who were separated at birth, each owith her own distinct personality and plot lines. Aired during primetime, it premiered on 5 April 1999 on ABS-CBN.

    Maging Sino Ka Man
Maging Sino ka Man was another successful primetime teleserye by ABS-CBN which premiered on 9 October 2006. It was a story about love and justice and the barrier that separates people of different social classes. It focused on the journey of four main characters intertwined by fate while searching for the meaning of their lives. The series was acclaimed for its plots and cast and ultimately launched Sam Milby’s career as an actor. It aired until may 2007.

    Flor de Luna
Flor de Luna is regarded as one of the classic soap operas that paved the way for modern teleseryes in the Philippines. It was shown on RPN-9 in the 1980s starring the young Janice de Belen in the title role. Flor de Luna was about an 11-year-old girl who wants to bring her family together amidst the trials and tribulations they face in their lives. It became critical and commercial phenomenon. The teleserye was actually based on a radio drama from the 1970s entitled Flordeluna, written by Marcos Navarro Sacol. Child star Julie Vega was first offered the role of Flor de Luna but turned it down due to schedule conflict. de Belen became the newest child star.

    Mula sa Puso
Mula sa Puso was one of most popular teleseryes in the 1990s. Featuring a star-studded cast, it ran from 1997 to 1999 for 175 episodes. It was the most watched teleserye in primetime TV for two years, with an average of 51% national ratings per week. It tells the story of Via (played by Claudine Barretto) who is torn between two men in her life while uncovering the mysteries of her family’s past. Mula sa Puso was credited for popularizing the Barretto and Rico Yan, who died a few years later. One element that left a mark in the minds of the viewers was the conflict between Selina (played by Princess Punzalan) and Via. Punzalan’s character instantly became the most hated villain in television at the time.

    Villa Quintana
Villa Quintana is considered the most memorable teleserye produced by GMA Network. With Donna Cruz in the lead role, it was the first teleserye to be shown during primetime. Prior to this, teleseryes were usually shown in the afternoon. Looking for a new ‘audience’ other than mothers and maids, GMA launched Villa Quintana in the evening, against the formidable TV Patrol. It managed to snatch the ratings of the news program, forcing ABS-CBN to field Mara Clara to primetime. Villa Quintana’s story is derived from Romeo and Juliet, where two young lovers, Isagani Samonte and Lynnette Quintana, struggle to overcome the feud between their families to fulfill their love for each other. The teleserye was much remembered for its theme song sung by Donna Cruz entitled “Only Me and You,” which instantly became a radio hit.

    Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay
Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay was one of the most awarded teleseryes in the Philippines. With a powerful cast including Lorna Tolentino, John Lloyd Cruz, John Estrada, Edu Manzano, Jean Garcia and the late Johnny Delgado, it ruled primetime from 2001 to 2003. It told the story of twins who accidentally took each others’ place. The show’s unconventional subplots revolved around a mafia-like world. Adding to its uniqueness, most of the characters had Russian names. Some of the awards the teleserye earned were the CMMA Best Drama Series and PMPC Star Awards Best Primetime Drama Series. It was also a finalist in the Best Drama Series category of the International Emmy Awards.

    Valiente
Valiente is the longest teleserye produced by TAPE Inc. First aired on ABS-CBN from 1992 to 1995, it was moved to GMA Network from 1995 until 1997 due to a disagreement. Starring veteran actors and actresses, Valiente instantly became a household name. Its story revolves around two best friends, the rich Theo Braganza (played by Tirso Cruz III) and the poor Gardo Valiente (played by Michael de Mesa). A series of unfortunate events led the two to hate one another, turning the story into one of revenge, redemption and reconciliation.
