Osama bin Laden Dead Photo: To be Released or Not to be Released?
There are fake dead photos of bin Laden which proliferated on the web since the killing of the world’s most wanted terrorist last Sunday. The said photos added to doubts of some naysayers, including the Taliban, who are still not convinced the Al Qaeda leader is already dead.
The Obama administration, on the other hand, wrestled on Tuesday if they are going to release the “gruesome” image of bin Laden’s corpse. Critics say it would be distasteful, inappropriate and offensive to the Muslims. Plus the graphic image will find its way to every computer with an internet access around the world and even children can see it.
“What we don’t want to do is to release anything that might be either misunderstood or that would cause other problems,” said President Barack Obama’s top counter-terrorism adviser, John Brennan.
The corpse of bin Laden was reportedly buried under the sea in less than 24 hours after his death. US officials said that burial within 24 hours after death is according to Islamic custom. The reason for the at-sea burial, on the other hand, is to prevent Bin Laden’s followers to build a shrine.
