Beijing opened itself to the world at exactly 8:08 p.m. of August 8, 2008 as the 29th Olympiad officially started. A Zhang Yimou-directed performance dazzled the 90,000-plus spectators that filled the "bird's nest" National Stadium specially made for the event.
