Review: The Departed

VIDEO REVIEW: The Departed (2006) Synopsis: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg star in Martin Scorsese's new crime drama The Departed. The film is set in South Boston, where the state police is waging war on organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob run by gangland chief Costello (Nicholson). While Billy is quickly gaining Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan (Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for Costello, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy - and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

Review:
The movie is masterfully made, probably one of Martin Scorsese’s best films of his career. No doubt, Martin Scorsese will win his first Oscar for Best Director this year! What’s more, director Martin Scorsese mesmerizes with pacing, camera movement and brutal form and emotional design.

As Martin is as his best, the ensemble performed excellently, too! Award-worthy performances from Leonardo diCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the male actors.

Although the movie is brutal, profane, dark and no redemptive message in the end, the acting, the pacing and directing were marvelous enough to be nominated as one of the best films of 2006. But in my opinion, the Best Picture award still belongs to Little Miss Sunshine.

In a scale of 1 to 10 stars (1 being the lowest and 10 the highest), i would give this movie: 8 1/2 stars.
