Can You Use CBD for Dogs with Anxiety?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, CBD for short, is one of the compounds found in the marijuana plant and is suggested to have beneficial effects on humans and pets. It should be noted that CBD is different from the other active ingredient in marijuana which is the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the compound that is responsible for the high or euphoria that people experience with the use of marijuana products. This product can be harmful to animals when prescribed at human doses. For pets, therefore, CBD is extracted from the hemp strain, which contains very minimal amounts of THC and is more concentrated on the cannabidiol levels.

How does it work?

All mammals, including your furry pet, contain an endocannabinoid system that helps to maintain balance in the body in terms of mood and emotions such as pain. In animals, it is also said to help regulate appetite, sleep patterns, and the immune system. Cannabinoids found in the CBD product given to your pet, for instance, can then activate the endocannabinoid receptors in the body’s nervous system. As a result, your pup will be a lot calmer, and relaxed and can even help to alleviate pain and allergies.

CBD for anxiety

Anxiety can manifest in a dog in various forms, such as through aggression, fear, or an inability to separate from its owner. Frequent or sudden noises can also cause your dog to experience anxiety. Such circumstances can inhibit your pup from living their best life, which can also impact you negatively. For instance, it may be difficult to have guests over due to the aggression from the dog, and leaving for work every day can be a hassle. Moreover, it may be difficult for your pup to interact or play with other animals, and they can be hostile to other pets you have such as cats. While there are no studies that have been done to support this, research has shown that the use of CBD for dog anxiety can help your dog to be more relaxed, reducing the frantic pacing, uneasiness, and whining. It is said to be effective within 5 to 20 minutes upon administration, and it has been claimed that CBD can thus help your pup by regulating their mood and boosting serotonin levels.

Administering the product

When it comes to the use of CBD, you may want to consider the use of oil which is easy to administer. Often, the product is given to the pup through the use of a dropper either in the mouth or under the tongue. This method is pain-free and hence, will thus encounter less resistance from your pup. As it is with any drug, the use of CBD oil or products can have side effects on your dog such as diarrhea or drowsiness. You must consult your veterinarian before offering your dog CBD, to ensure that you get the right dosage for them. It would also be helpful to confirm if it is safe to use the product, especially if your pup has any other medication.
