Things to Ask Before You Move in Together

If you have been dating your significant other for a while, you might be thinking of moving in with them. It seems to make perfect sense: You make each other happy and know that spending more time together would make you happier still. You’ve talked about it as a couple, and you both feel it’s the right time—but have you thought it through carefully? Here are four questions to ask yourself before you take the dive and move in together.

Are You Both on the Same Page?

For some people, moving in together is the last step before getting engaged and married. For others, it’s a big stage in a relationship but doesn’t necessarily mean that marriage or long-term commitment is on the cards. For some, it’s just something that makes sense to do at the moment.

It’s important to ask your partner where they feel the relationship is going before moving in together. If one of you is expecting to be married within a year or two while the other is just doing it for convenience, there will be trouble ahead.

Find out where your partner stands and decide how you want to move forward.

Have you Spent a Long Time Together Before?

It’s not unheard of for people who move in together to be surprised by annoying habits they didn’t know their partner had. Maybe they hum constantly, or perhaps they spend hours in the bathroom every day.

If you’ve never spent an extended period with someone, you can’t know what they are really like at home. Try going on vacation with someone first to see how it goes—while this won’t show you how tidy they are at home or whether they load the dishwasher wrong; it should at least give you an idea of how you’ll get on when you’re both tired or hungry.

Where Will You Live?

This is a hugely important question to find an answer to. Will, one of you, move into the other’s apartment or house, or will you find a new place together? If you plan to move into your partner’s place, it can be difficult to make it feel like “your” home. What if there is nowhere to put your favorite possessions?

If you choose to find a new home together, another consideration is how you will furnish it. You both likely have items of furniture but finding a space for everything can be difficult. Why not hire some storage space? That way, you can avoid throwing anything away. If you need help finding a self-storage facility near you, take a look at www.storagearea.com to search through various options.

Have You Talked About Money?

Nobody likes talking about their finances, but it’s vital to have this conversation before moving in with someone. It’s not just about figuring out if you can both afford the move itself (it’s expensive, after all); it’s also about planning who will pay for what. Will you split the bills down the middle? This is a great option for some, but it may not work out in practice if one person earns more than the other.

Talk about this before you move in to avoid awkwardness later down the line.

Once you have these practicalities out of the way, you and your partner can relax and enjoy the excitement of moving in together. It’s a romantic time!
