Best Movies Unavailable in the Philippines and How to Watch Them

There’s nothing better than sitting down on your couch after a long day of work and watching your favorite shows and movies. And with the current COVID-19 pandemic, this may be all you’re able to do since COVID-19 has forced many of us inside our homes. Well, at least you can watch movies, right?

Unfortunately, many countries limit what their citizens have access to, a practice known as geo-blocking. Said practice extends to streaming services, and viewing certain content can prove to be quite the challenge. After all, you can’t exactly travel to a different country because you want to watch a specific movie. It’s just not plausible.

But don’t worry–I got your back. Bypassing geo-blocking is as easy as connecting to a different IP address, which can be done by using a VPN. A VPN allows you to choose what server/country you’d like to connect to and will grant you a new IP address upon doing so.  Using one will also allow you to watch the following movies–movies I highly recommend.

Alias Grace

Alias Grace tells the tragic tale of Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon), a presumed murderer who is caught between freedom and lifelong imprisonment. The show follows psychologist Dr. Simon Jordan in his quest to determine whether or not Grace should be pardoned for her crimes due to insanity.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, Alias Grace did a lot with the one season granted to it, and while the show isn’t canceled, per se, no news of a renewal has popped up since the conclusion of the first season in 2017. Either way, it’s a great drama that you should check out. To watch it, simply connect to a server in the United States.

Purple Rain

Pop legend icon Prince takes on the role of “The Kid”, the (seemingly unnamed) protagonist of Purple Rain, a semi-autobiographical movie of Prince’s early life. Named after Prince’s number one hit, Purple Rain shows us the troubles Prince went through before he became one with fame, including relationship troubles, familial troubles, and career troubles.

If you’re looking for a documentary, look elsewhere, because Purple Rain is nowhere close to a documentary. If, however, you want to watch a dramatized reenactment of Prince’s upbringing, Purple Rain is the movie for you. It’s not family-friendly, so I don’t recommend watching this with family or children–just access a United States server and start watching!

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Illumination has earned a reputation throughout the years of being a company that, despite not producing the highest quality movies, produces enjoyable movies that are safe for the whole family. The Secret Life of Pets 2 is no different and builds upon the first movie.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 doesn’t have a high-quality storyline or the best animation out there (that award goes to Pixar), but it does succeed in delivering an enjoyable experience suitable for the whole family. During these troublesome times, it’s nice to watch a movie that’s just plain fun. Plus, watching it isn’t difficult. Only requiring a connection to a U.S. server.

9 is an animated movie that follows the journey of a hand-stitched doll known as 9, due to the number 9 being stitched into his back. Don’t let the animation fool you; the movie contains a very dark storyline, a storyline revolving around a war between humans and machines and the search for humans’ salvation.

Starring big names such as Elijah Wood, 9 tells a riveting tale of adventure, sorrow, and hope. Armed with impressive visuals (for the time), a beautiful soundtrack, and a great storyline, 9 is what I consider a sleeper hit, a movie that never got the recognition it deserved. It’s definitely worth the few seconds it takes to connect to a U.S. server to watch it.

The Pixar Story

Nearly half of the movies I’ve listed are animated movies, and that’s not a coincidence. I love animated movies because the sky’s the limit with them. Artists are allowed to take as many creative liberties as they want, unburdened by the limits of reality.

One company that succeeds in creating beautiful animated movies 100% of the time? Pixar. And The Pixar Story tells us the story of Pixar’s start, the upcoming of what would one day be a titan in the animated movie industry, if not the movie industry in general.

This documentary is a must-watch for any movie fan. Why not learn about Pixar’s early days? And just like every other movie on this list, watching it only requires a connection to the United States.

I miss going outside and hanging out with friends, but this pandemic won’t allow me–or anyone else for the matter–to do said things. This gives us plenty of time to watch tons of movies we’ve yet to see. And the movies I’ve listed are definitely worth watching or at least trying.

However, if you’re in the Philippines, watching these movies can be quite difficult. Fortunately, you can easily access these movies with a VPN. Take your pick of which one, there are many, but Techradar recommends ExpressVPN, saying it is the best VPN.

Thought I know most of the animation movies, but I never heard about the movie “9”. From its description, it looks like a pretty interesting movie, although it sounds a bit tough for kids? I wonder on which streaming platform I could find it since I didn’t see any streaming platform mentioned in this article? Btw, any platform will do, I have Surfshark VPN, so I have no issues passing the geo-restrictions.
