“Sunday Beauty Queen” by Baby Ruth Villarama made MMFF history by becoming the first documentary film to screen at the annual event and the first docu to win Best Picture.

The criteria for the selection of Best Picture(s) in the Metro Manila Film Festival are artistry, creativity and technical excellence, innovativeness, thematic value and global appeal, and Filipino cultural and/or historical value. Box office performance is no longer part of the criteria in selecting the winner.
