Former StarStruck winner Ryza Cenon and Kapuso heartthrob Martin del Rosario, both being managed by GMA Artist Center, formed a peculiar loveteam in the romantic thriller “Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B,” one of the entries in this year’s QCinema International Film Festival.

During a pocket interview at the block screening for the Prime Cruz movie last Monday, October 17, at Robinsons Galleria Movieworld, the two stars boasted of the film’s uniqueness and boldness.

“Matapang ang Tema. It’s not your usual storyline. Fresh din ang pag-tackle sa plot dahil hindi makabago ang treatment sa story. Makikita mo ang ibang klase ng manananggal,” Martin said.

“First time ko siyang nagawa, and naiyak ako bago ako magpunta sa set. Biglang nag-flash sa utak ko yung mga nagawa ko dati, and it made me realize how big an opportunity this is. I think this helped me impoved my craft as an actress.”

Ryza and Martin described their roles in the movie.

“Ako si Jewel, introvert. Meron siyang sikreto. Takot siya sa tao kasi feeling niya na hihuhusgahan siya so parang hindi siya friendly masyado e,” the young actess said.

“Ako naman si Nico. Mabait ako na medyo naive. Kung si Jewel sobrang intense, maraming sikreto, ako feeling ko sa sarili ko na unloved ako, maraming angst sa buhay maraming frustrations. Galing akong break-up, heartbroken ako. Tapos mami-meet ko si Jewel. Unang tingin ko sa kanya parang ‘sino itong babae na ‘to napakamisteryoso. Sa simula parang hindi kama nagkaka-getsan magusap, magkaibang wavelength kasi kami. Sa dami ng failures na nangyayari sa buhay ko si Jewel naging kakampi ko siya to the point na walang wala na ako. Marerealize ko na siya ang gusto ko. Abangan niyo na lang sa film kung anong magiging reaksyon ni Nico kapag nakita niya si Jewel na mahati sa dalawa,” told Martin.

Ryza was thrown the inevitable question: how did she prepare for the masturbation scene and the sex scene in the movie:

“Nung nabasa ko siya alam ko na kung ano yung mangyayari. Nagbigay lang si Direk ng frame kung paano magiging itsura pero nasa akin na kung paano siya ire-react, yung actions ko. Yung blocking ng kung ilang seconds na ganito kung kelan ganito ganyan sila direk yun. Pero huwag niyo ako i-judge ha (everyone laughs). Kasi sa normal na buhay hindi ko talaga siya ginagawa. So ang ginawa ko, nag-isip ako ng hayop na pwede kong gamitin tapos nanood ako ng porn. Magiging honest ako kasi kailangan ko siyang panoorin para makita ko ‘yung mga reactions, ganun, kung ano ba ang ginagawa. Basta ginawa ko siya dahil sa art. Saka hindi siya bastos,” she said.

But will this be the start of more sexy projects for Ryza in the future?

“Depende pa rin, hindi naman ibig sabihin na ginawa ko yan e puro na lang sexy sexy sexy hubad hubad hubad ang gagawin ko. Depende pa rin sa material. Siyempre gusto ko pa rin mag-explore. Di lang naman ‘yun ang kaya kong gawin e, marami pa akong kayang gawin e, hindi lang paghuhubad,” she said.

Directed by Prime Cruz (“Sleepless”) under the screenplay of Jen Chuaunsu, the film also stars Cholo Barretto and Vangie Labalan. It was produced under the Idea First Company of Percival Intalan and Jun Robles Lana.
