Hidilyn Diaz became a household name in the Philippines over the weekend after winning the country’s first Olympic medal in 20 years

Diaz won a silver medal at the women’s 53kg weightlifting category in Rio Olympic Games. weightlifters from Taipei and South Korea bagged the Gold and Bronze, respectively.

The stint also gave the country the first non-boxing medal since 1936 and the first Filipina Olympian ever to win a medal and the first medalist from Mindanao.

Diaz boarded an Emirates flight back to Manila on Tuesday, August 10. She is expected to arrive at NAIA 3 on Thursday where a hero’s welcome awaits her.
