Gist: A celebrated screenwriter of romantic-comedy films is at a turning point in her life which makes it difficult for her to believe that love could last. Everything comes to a head when her ex-boyfriend returns, only for her to find out that he has become a cynic of lasting love because she broke his heart.
The Positive: When reports came that JM de Guzman was replaced by Jericho Rosales for this movie, I was a bit disappointed. But after watching the film earlier, I realized that Jericho is perfect for the role. He made a mark with his charming performance as Ethan and established a strong chemistry with lead actress Jennylyn Mercado who also did very well in the movie. While Jericho is a big threat to John Lloyd Cruz as Best Actor, I think Jennylyn is a shoo-in for Best Actress, her second consecutive win in MMFF if ever. Both Jericho and Jennylyn have great timing in executing their lines and their chemistry is inspiring.
Last year’s MMFF Best Director Dan Villegas really stepped up in “#WalangForever” which I can consider his best work yet. He was able to build a rapport between the two main players fairly naturally, and managed to make the rom-com cliches adorable.
The film’s screenplay, by the way, is quite engaging. In fact, there are notable moments in the movie where you will praise the dialogues created by screenwriter Paul Sta. Ana. Thanks to the superb execution of the script by Jericho and Jennylyn, and the whole ensemble. Nothing is wasted.
To sum it up, “#WalangForever” easily snatched the “best romantic movie of 2015” tag from the monster hit “A Second Chance.” It started in a lighthearted tone and ended in a poignant conclusion that will linger in your mind for a long time.
The Negative: The film’s first half will make you think that it’s using Star Cinema’s tried and tested rom-com formula. But it redeemed itself in the second half when all the elements become stronger and stronger.
STARMOMETER SCORE: 9/10
