Bintan Lagoon Resort: Tropical Paradise Near Singapore

Last weekend, my passport got an Indonesia stamp for the first time as we took a sidetrip to Bintan Lagoon Resort in our Singapore vacation. How I got here in this beautiful tropical paradise on Bintan Island, Indonesia, was due to my curiosity after discovering that it’s only about an hour and a half away from the Red Dot.

Here is my review of this beautiful island getaway:

Its location is one of the most interesting and unique aspects of Bintan Lagoon Resort. It happens to be the largest integrated resort on the island which is about an hour and a half travel by ferry from Singapore.

It’s 300 hectares of manicured gardens, and private, golden sand beach that stretches nearly 1.5km. The other resorts in Bintan island are located some distance away, so you get undisturbed peace on the beach and other facilities. To me this is the perfect getaway, serene and absolute quiet and calmness with the relaxing sound of the ocean waves and at night you hear crickets singing while you marvel at the stars in the sky.

Getting to Bintan Lagoon Resort from Singapore is easy. From Tanah Merah MRT station, there are buses going to the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. It’s close to the airport, by the way, so you can just take a cab if you’re coming from Changi. It will take about 10 minutes from the airport to the ferry terminal.

Inside Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, look for Mozaic Ferry Lines and buy tickets from there before you proceed to the immigration. The ferry will bring you directly to Bintan Lagoon Resort and NOT to Bintan Island’s Bandar Bentan Telani terminal. And did you know that BLR has their own immigration center? That’s how convenient it is to go to Bintan Lagoon Resort, you don’t need to go to BBT (the island’s main entry point) and then take another ride going to BLR. Click here for ferry schedules.

Bintan Lagoon Resort has 186 Deluxe Rooms and 209 Deluxe Plus Rooms (both measures a spacious 37sqm), 7 Forest Suite (74 sqm), 9 Floral Suite (92 sqm), 1 Indraloka Suite (111 sqm) and 1 Swargaloka Suite (148 sqm). Aside from the hotel rooms, they also have Villas which include living space and kitchen. They have 8 Angsoka Villa-Sea View and 12 Angsoka Villa-Sea Facing (both 325 sqm with 1 double, 2 twin & 1 single rooms), 18 Buganvil Villa (185 sqm with 1 double, 1 twin & 2 single rooms), and Campaka Villa (140sqm with 1 double & 2 single rooms).

All 470 rooms, suites and villas offer the following in-room facilities:

• King or King Single (twin) Bedding Configuration
• Air-conditioning
• Cable Television with Multilingual Channels
• IDD / ISD telephone
• Personal safe
• In room Fridge
• High Speed Internet Access (wifi)
• Hair dryer
• Complete Bathroom Amenities
• Shower Over bath
• Bath Tub
• Coffee & Tea Making Facilities
• Bathrobes & Souvenir Slippers
• Complimentary Mineral Water
• Furnished Private Balcony

We had a Deluxe Room with twin bedding configuration and a balcony offering a view of the garden and the beach. Everything is clean and well maintained living up to its 5-star status. All the facilities listed above are complete with some extras: a complimentary fruit bowl and mosquito repellent lotion in case you want to stroll at night.

The TV comes with satellite channels with lots of movie channels to choose from. And yes wifi is also complimentary 24/7.

During our stay we did not encounter any electrical problems, everything is working just fine. The pillows and bed sheets are clean, the toilet are sanitized…overall we are satisfied.

Accommodations in BLR come with a complimentary breakfast buffet at Kopi-O Cafe which starts at around 6:00am. Located just off the lobby, this restaurant offers a large variety of food ranging from Asian staples to western dishes. My rating for food is highly satisfactory. I especially like the beef bacon, the Indonesian noodles and the cook-to-order omelette.

This Cafe, by the way, is also the venue for the daily themed evening buffets complete with live cooking stations.

The beach boasts of fine white sand being kept clean by occasional sweeping by staff. The play area for beach volleyball and beach soccer is huge. There are kayaks and surf boards available for rent. There’s also a friendly attendant who can teach you how to surf. I listed the complete water activities available in BLR under “Sea Sports.” If you want to relax, there’s also a place for beach massage.

The main swimming pool (with a bar) is located near the beach in front of the main reception building and another pool with two slides and waterfalls located near the Leisure Center. Both picturesque pools are clean and well maintained.

And speaking of Leisure Center, there’s a Karaoke Lounge, a room with Wii/Xbox, a fitness gym, a Batik painting area, and several billiards, table football and table tennis. Did I mention that they also home to two 18-hole Championship Golf Courses? I listed the complete recreational activities for adults under “Land Activities.”

BLR also offers the perfect setting for private parties, corporate meetings, conferences, and team building activities. They have 10 different meeting rooms, 5 great halls for banquets of up to 750 people, and business facilities.

BLR also boasts of 12 dining and entertainment options offering inspiring dining creations, diverse cuisines and tantalizing choices in ambient settings.

There are also several shops/stores near the reception lobby.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Spa offers a wide range of services that include scrubs, facials, body wraps, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy and massages. Treatment times for packages ranges from 1 hour to 4 hours. In-room massage is also available 24 hours a day.

On our arrival, a cultural show welcomed us at the main reception area. We were greeted by the friendly Guest Relation Officer Fifit Syahbuddin who seated us on comfortable sofas while they check us in, we do not have to queue and wait at the reception desk. After offering a welcome drink, she briefed us on the hotel and room facility and made sure that everything was taken cared for. She gave us complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner passes and entrance coupons at Silk Bar before a bellboy lead us to our room and help us with our luggage.

Fifit was very friendly, it feels like we’re old friends. In the afternoon after eating lunch at Haskell’s Cafe (which offered scrumptious buffet and desserts by the way), she toured us in the whole Bintan Lagoon Resort by a buggy. We had so much fun!

Aside from Fifit, one thing I noticed with the other staff members, they are very friendly, courteous and accommodating which made our 3 days in BLR extra special. And the dinner with BLR CEO Mr. Moe Ibrahim at the Melayan Beachfront Bar and Dining (formerly RICE) was the highlight of our fam tour. I did not expect that he’s only in his early forties. He is very friendly, gentlemanly and down-to-earth. He shared with us his future plans on Bintan Lagoon Resort and listened to our feedback/suggestions as well.

In view of the fact that BLR is indeed a true tropical paradise resort hotel away from major infrastructures, the management and staff are doing a fantastic job.

Mesmerizing Beach

Bintan Island Resort is classified as a 5-star resort hotel and it lives up to that status as the rooms and facilities are exceptionally clean and well maintained, and the beach is at par with world class beaches of Boracay and Palawan. But don’t let the term “luxury” fool you because accommodations here are not as expensive as you may think it is. There are other resort hotels which are way more pricey but they don’t have the complete amenities and activities that BLR can offer. All I can say is, you get what you pay for: awesome food varieties, exceptional amenities/facilities, very accommodating staff, and memorable experience. Our 3 days we’re definitely not enough.

I highly recommend Bintan Lagoon Resort if you’re looking for a fun-filled getaway, a memorable adventure, a gastronomical indulgence, a relaxing reboot, a mid-week game of golf, or a romantic escape set against a remarkable backdrop. If you’re visiting Singapore soon, take a side-trip to this tropical paradise to see for yourself why I am using so many superlatives.
