MMFF 2014 Box Office – ‘Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin’ Surpasses P300-M, ‘English Only Please’ Enters Top 4
It’s now safe to say that the Viva Films-Star Cinema comedy movie is the official MMFF 2014 top-grosser based from Vice Ganda’s tweet last Friday, January 2, that his film already crossed P300 million. Last December 28, “Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin” was the first among 8 entries to surpass P100 million.
According to Dominic Du of the MMFF executive committee, the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival already earned more than P701 million as of January 1. He also announced that the award-winning “English Only Please” is now running at no. 4 nudging down “Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles” to no. 5.
Without revealing the actual box office receipts, here are the rankings of the 8 MMFF entries:
1. Amazing Praybet Benjamin
2. Feng Shui 2
3. My Big Bossing
4. English, Only Please
5. Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles
6. Shake, Rattle and Roll XV
7. Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo
8. Muslim Magnum .357
Both “Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin” and “Feng Shui 2” were snubbed during the MMFF 2014 Awards night (“Gabi ng Parangal”) last December 27. Vice Ganda failed to bag a Best Actor nomination, the category which was won by Derek Ramsay for “English Only, Please.” Kris Aquino, on the other hand, failed to get a Best Actress nomination for “Feng Shui 2,” the category which was won by Jennylyn Mercado for “English Only, Please.” Furthermore, both films did not get a single award.
Aside from “English Only, Please” which boasts of Best Actor (Derek Ramsay), Best Actress (Jennylyn Mercado) and Best Director (Dan Villegas) wins, the other two films which got the lion share of the awards are Best Picture winner “Bonifacio” and the Dingdong Dantes-starrer “Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles” which won Best Supporting Actor (Joey Marquez) and Best Supporting Actress (Lotlot de Leon) aside from technical awards like Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.
