PH Bet Michael Martinez Qualifies for Figure Skating Finals in Sochi Olympics

And there goes the first Filipino to ever skate in the Winter Olympics. And he qualified for the medal round!

Skating to the “Romeo and Juliet” anthem, Michael Christian Martinez landed on his triple axel, triple lutz and triple loop successfully which earned him the score of 64.81. He needs to be in the top 24 to continue to tomorrow’s free skate.

Michael received cheers from the 12,000 people inside the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia and was applauded twice in the middle of his performance and again at the end. Martinez is referred to by sports fans as a “very charismatic and very flexible skater.” The female sportscaster commissioned by the NBC, whose name was not flashed on screen, commented that it was “a great performance from such a young man.”

Before Michael started, the same sportscaster said that the skate “is history in the making, the first for the Philippines.” “What a debut for the Philippines,” she remarked after Michael’s skate. “That was fantastic and a wonderful performance. I honestly didn’t think it will be that good.”
