Two Best Pictures, 13-Year-Old Best Actress in ‘CineFilipino Festival’
Spearheaded by PLDT-Smart Foundation, MediaQuest, Studio 5 and Unitel Entertainment, CineFilipino Film Festival opened its doors to interested filmmakers in August 2012 and attracted almost 150 entries from across the country. After a grueling selection process, eight feature film entries were chosen and their filmmakers given a seed grant of P1.5 M to produce their movies. Ten short films were also selected to compete in the Short Film category.
During the awards night, Mes De Guzman’s “Ang Kwento ni Mabuti” and Sigrid Andrea Bernardo’s “Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita” were both declared Best Picture, each bagging the cash prize of P500,000 and an opportunity for the winning entries to be converted into 35mm films. Thirteen-year-old Teri Malvar, who made her acting debut in “Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita”, won Best Actress while Karl Medina of “The Guerrilla is a Poet” bagged the Best Actor award.
Aside from the Best Picture award, “Ang Kwento ni Mabuti” also won Best Screenplay and Best Director for Mes De Guzman. “Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita”, in addition to its Best Picture and Best Actress awards, also bagged the Best Supporting Actress award for Angel Aquino and the Best Acting Ensemble award.
Sari and Kiri Dalena’s “The Guerrilla is a Poet” won Best Actor for Karl Medina, Best Supporting Actor for Bong Cabrera, Best Film Editing for Raffy Magsaysay, and Best Musical Score for Keith Sicat.
Mike Alcazaren’s “Puti” swept the awards for Best Cinematography (Roberto Yñiguez), Best Production Design (Rious Caliso), and Best Sound (Mark Laccay).
For the Short Film category, Pam Reyes’ “Ligaw” won the Best Short Film award and P100,000 cash. Kimberly Ocariza’s “Logaritmo” won P75,000 cash for being the 2nd Best Short Film while Jose Ibarra Guballa and Bienvenido Ferrer III’s “Sangandaan” was awarded 3rd Best Short Film and P50,000 cash.
The CineFilipino Film Festival runs from September 18 to 24, showcasing its eight feature films and 10 short films in the Newport Cinemas of Resorts World Manila, Lucky Chinatown cinemas, Gateway Cineplex and EDSA Shangri-La Cineplex –- the festival’s cinema partners.
