‘Tarzan’ the Musical Hits the Stage on June 14

The Viva Atlantis Theatricals’ production of "Tarzan," The Disney Musical is all set to open on June 14, 2013.

This classic tale by Edgar Rice Burrough’s was adapted by into a smash hit animated film that has now been reimagined for the stage with a book by David Henry Hwang and the award winning songs of Phil Collins.

TARZAN tells the story of a baby taken in and raised by a tribe of gorillas in the Congo. Tarzan grows up unconditionally loved by his adoptive mother, Kala, but struggles to find acceptance from his father, Kerchak. He survives the wild and tries to be ‘the best ape ever’ with the help of his best friend, Terk. A human expedition arrives under the leadership of Professor Porter and jungle guide, Clayton. With them is the adventurous Jane Porter who arrives in the jungle and feels right at home. When Tarzan finally meets her and finds that there are strangers just like him, their worlds are changed forever.

Leading the production as Tarzan and Jane are Dan Domenech and Rachelle Ann Go.

Dan

Dan was handpicked among a number of Broadway actors considered for the role. His Broadway debut was in the lead role of Drew in Rock Of Ages. His credits include the pre-Broadway productions of Sister Act and Wonderland. Regionally, he has done Rent, Altar Boyz, The Who’s Tommy and most recently, played the title role in Disney’s Aladdin. Dan has also appeared in the hit TV musical, Glee.

Rachelle Ann Go takes on her second Disney musical after her triumphant stage debut as Ariel in Atlantis Productions’ “The Little Mermaid.” Rachelle rose to fame when she emerged the Grand Champion of the reality TV talent search, Search For A Star in 2004. She has since sold more than two hundred thousand records and performed in several major concerts here and all over the world. The singer, recording artist, TV and film actress now certainly calls the stage her second home.

Playing Kala is Ima Castro. Ima launched her career when she won the Grand Priza in the 1991 Panasonic nationwide Quest For The Best. She has since accumulated multiple awards in competitions all over the world aside from conquering the recording industry with hits like Shine. Ima soon found herself playing the Kim in Miss Saigon. This kept her based in London for a long while until she returned to Manila to play the title role in Atlantis Productions’ Aida. This was followed by critically acclaimed performances in In The Heights, Piaf and most recently, The Full Monty.

Calvin Millado joins the cast as Kerchak, the ape tribe leader torn between his desire to protect his tribe and his duties as husband and father to his adoptive son. The former balladeer and recording artist who came into public awareness along with Ariel Rivera and Dante Ponce as the handsome Backroom triumvirate. Calvin. Eventually, Calvin found his niche as host, performer and businessman. But Calvin found a home in the theater. He wowed Manila as Roger in Rent and has gone on to play many roles. His most recent credits include German tycoon, Hertz in Rock Of Ages, and the Genie in Aladdin.

TARZAN serves as Jeffery Hidalgo’s comeback to the theater after a ten year hiatus, his last play being Once On This Island. Jeffrey first invaded the music scene as a member of the singing group Smokey Mountain. The group had double platinum hit singles and went on to represent the country in numerous shows, summits and festivals all over the world.

Singer, record producer and music industry executive, Eugene Villaluz returns to his theater roots as Professor Porter. Past theater credits include West Side Story, Judah Ben Hur, Larawan, Noli Me Tangere, Gomburza, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He is famous for such OPM hits as Gulong Ng Palad, Ikaw Ako Tayo Magkakapatid and Nothing I Want More which won the Grand Priza at the Seoul Music Festival in 1981.

Arnel Carrion is a theater veteran with a long list of theater credits under his belt. He has worked with leading theater companies in Manila like Repertory Philippines, Fourth Wall Theater Inc, among others. Most recently he appeared in The King And I. This time he joins TARZAN as the greedy, villainous Clayton.

Alternating as Young Tarzan are Warren Saga and Carlos Dala. Warren returns to the stage after appearing as the Young Guido in Nine and returning to Manila after a run in The Lion King Singapore as Young Simba. Carlos Dala recently appeared in The King And I. Alternating as Young Terk are twin brothers JM and JC Urquico. They also have appeared in The King And I.

Rounding off this stellar cast are Mako Alonso, J. Martin Castro, Tristan Rae Cheng, Reg Claravall, Johann Dela Fuente, Jim Ferrer, Nel Gomez, Lillette Lorenzana, Kim Molina, Gem Quintos and Chris Yu.
