Landmark Human Trafficking Case Revisited in ‘Saklolo’
ABS-CBN reporters Maan Macapagal and Dominic Almelor recount a landmark legal case in 2008 that marked the first time a Filipino was convicted of human trafficking tomorrow (Jan 23) in “Pinoy True Stories: Saklolo.”
Find out how then-15 year old Rubylyn Acebo was duped into accepting a job offer from a certain “Dolores.” Desperate for money, Rubylyn took the waiting job despite all doubts and traveled to Puerto Galera along with Dolores and other minors.
Dolores turned out to be an illegal recruiter and with the help of non-government organization Visayan Forum, Rubylyn filed a case against her.
On March 10, 2008, Dolores was found guilty of violating Republic Act 9208 or the Anti-Human Trafficking Law. The case was considered groundbreaking because Dolores was the first condemned human trafficker in the Philippines.
Don’t miss “Pinoy True Stories: Saklolo” tomorrow (Jan 23) on ABS-CBN, 4:45 PM in Kapamilya Gold. For updates on the two programs, follow @PinoyTruStories on Twitter.
