‘Bwakaw’ Fails to Make It to the 9 Shortlisted Entries for Oscars Best Foreign Language Category

Despite rave reviews from various foreign press, the Philippines’ official Oscar entry “Bwakaw,” perhaps the best Asian movie for 2012, failed to make it to the 9 shortlisted entries running for Best Foreign Language category of the 85th Academy Awards.

The 9 movies that will vie for the 5 slots and become official nominees for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar are (in no particular order):

1. “Amour,” directed by Michael Haneke (Austria)
2. “War Witch,” directed by Kim Nguyen (Canada)
3. “No,” directed by Pablo Larraín (Chile)
4. “A Royal Affair,” directed by Nikolaj Arcel (Denmark)
5. “The Intouchables,” directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano (France)
6. “The Deep,” directed by Baltasar Kormákur
7. “Kon-Tiki,” directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Norway)
8. “Beyond the Hills,” directed by Cristian Mungiu (Romania)
9. “Sister,” directed by Ursula Meier (Switzerland).

It’s interesting to note that no Asian film has made it to the short list this year.

Aside from the Philippines’ “Bwakaw,” other note-worthy films like Germany’s “Barbara” and Australia’s “Lore” did not make it to the list.

“Bwakaw” won its latest award last week, Best Actor trophy for Eddie Garcia at 55th Asia Pacific Film Festival which was held The Venetian Resort Hotel in Macau.

The Jun Lana film was also listed by Film Comment Magazine among the Top 5 undistributed movies in the world for 2012.
