Philippine Volcanoes Advances to 2013 Rugby World Cup 7s

The Philippine National Rugby team, also known as "the Volcanoes," defeated South Korea and finished 3rd at the Singapore leg of the HSBC Asian 7s Series. The victory earned them a slot in the 2013 Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow.

It was a gruesome battle for 3rd place at the Asian 7s in Singapore because it’s the last slot in order to qualify for the Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow next year. The Volcanoes defeated the South Koreans with a score of 22-19.

The Philippine team opened its Asian 7s campaign with a 33-0 trashing of Guam, before bowing to Hong Kong, 29-12. Then they posted an amazing 14-7 finish against powerhouse China in the quarterfinals.

However in the semis, they were defeated by Japan, 7-17.

Japan and Hong Kong won the other two seats in the World 7s but the Philippines’ 3rd place finish was the breakout story during the meet that marks a milestone for Philippine rugby and Philippine sports in general.
