Typhoon Quiel Update for October 2, 2011

Typhoon Quiel is still over the West Philippine Sea and continues to move away from the country according to the October 2, 2011, 11:00 am bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Bagyong Quiel is was spotted 290 km West of Baguio City (16.5°N, 117.7°E) with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph. It is moving west at 20 kph according to PAGASA.

Tonight (Sunday evening), bagyong Quiel is expected to be at 500 km West of Baguio City.

Public Storm Warning Signals elsewhere are now lowered.

Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under Public Storm Warning Signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.

Typhoon “Quiel” enhances the Southwest Monsoon and brings scattered to widespread rains over Western section of Southern Luzon.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 15 – 25 mm per hour within the 500 km diameter of the Typhoon.

Meanwhile, the low pressure area (LPA) was estimated at 660 km East of Visayas (11.8°N, 132.8°E).

The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 5 PM today.
