Today, August 31, is dubbed as "Zomba Day" because it marks the opening of "Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington" in theaters.

“Zombadings” had its premiere last month during the 2011 Cinemalaya Film Festival. It was also shown in some sponsored screenings prior to its commercial run today. And I must say that the film opened beyond expectations because of the long line of moviegoers–women, gays and even straight men with their girlfriends–excited to watch the horror comedy gay movie. And I also did not expect that it got a longer line compared to other movies that also opened today. This alone is already a feat for the indie film.

“Zombadings” is being touted as the Philippines’ first zombie-comedy movie from the producers who brought us the Oscar entry “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros.” Like “Maximo,” it also received rave reviews from critics and most importantly, it scored the highest grade of “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB). This is perhaps the reason, aside from the positive buzz from those who were able to catch the film earlier, that this movie jampacked the theaters on a regular Wednesday night. I thought only women and gays will watch this movie and I was wrong.

“Zombadings” is topbilled by Martin Escudero who played the role of Remington. The StarStruck alum is indeed a revelation in this film. And If I’m not mistaken, this is the first title role of his career and needless to say, his performance in this film could earn him a handful of Best Actor nominations next year.

The film also stars Lauren Young, Kerbie Zamora, Janice de Belen, John Regala, Angelina Kanapi, Leandro Baldemor, Daniel Fernando and with a special participation of Roderick Paulate and Eugene Domingo.

Directed by Jade Castro, “Zombadings” is now showing in theaters nationwide.
