Bert and Ernie to Get Married? Holy Sesame!

There's an online petition calling for the nuptials of Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie.

Some people are outraged by the idea of Lair Scott from Chicago who posted the petition for the marriage of the two muppet characters “to make gay and lesbian kids who watch the show feel better about themselves, and to promote tolerance for people who are different.”

Scott also reasoned out that he has a legitimate argument since Sesame Street is located in New York and gay marriage has just became legal in the State last June.

The petition had collected 5,800 signatures already as of Thursday.

But not all New Yorkers are in favor of the idea. Website Change.org has started a counter-petition with the following slogans: “Stop Bert and Ernie from getting married”; “Stop the senseless false labeling of these two best friends”; and “Leave Bert and Ernie alone.”

Setting the “gay marriage” issue aside, I think Bert and Ernie can get married if they have feelings for each other in the first place. Unless the producers of the show want to elevate the decades-long friendship of the flatmates to the next level, but I doubt it.

“Bert and Ernie” has been a trending topic on Twitter worldwide.
