Oscar Watch: ‘True Grit’

This Western movie boasts of 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Jeff Bridges and Best Supporting Actress for Fil-Am Hailee Steinfeld.

True Grit is a Western film written and directed by Joel & Ethan Coen (Fargo, No Country for Old Men). It is the second adaptation of Charles Portis‘ 1968 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted for film in 1969 starring John Wayne. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, and Jeff Bridges as U.S. Marshal Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn along with Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper.

Synopsis: A fourteen year old girl seeks the help of the toughest U.S. Marshall she can find to track down and kill the man that shot her father. Much to the Marshall’s surprise, she insists of joining him on the long trek towards revenge.

The star of the movie is a 14-year-old Filipino-American Hailee Steinfeld. Hailee competed against 15,000 other applicants for the role of Mattie Ross, the lead character in the movie.

Although her performance is a lead role in True Grit, she was nominated under the Best Supporting Actress category in the upcoming Oscar Awards. However in BAFTA (the British Oscars), she was lined-up under the Best Actress category.

“True Grit” is vying for 10 awards in this year’s Academy Awards. Here is the list of Oscar nods received by the film:
