Producers of ‘Rosario’ Put MMFF Ruling Into Question

Cinemabuhay is disappointed with the results of the recently concluded awards night of the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Despite some changes that were implemented to improve the Metro Manila Film Festival, this year’s edition became as controversial as the previous ones.

These changes include a) the box-office results are no longer a factor in choosing the Best Picture and b) Only the top three nominees/contenders will be named in each category.

These new rules did not receive any criticism until the awards night happened last December 26 when “Rosario” lost the Best Picture award to “Ang Tanging Ina Mo, Last Na ‘To” and Albert Martinez and Jennylyn Mercado were snubbed of the Best Director and Best Actress nomination respectively.

The producers of the groundbreaking film expressed their disappointment.

In an e-mail to Yahoo! Southeast Asia, “Rosario” producer JoAnn C. Banaga put the nomination process into question:

“CINEMABUHAY and STUDIO 5 are not happy with the nomination process,” Banaga said. “The big question here is — How could the director of a RATED A movie not even get a nomination? Rosario got highly rated by the Cinema Evaluation Board composed of movie experts…who were the judges of the filmfest? And how could the MMFF change their rulings and just announce the top 3 nominees when in the past years all entries had nominations in each category? When did they change that ruling, overnight lang? We are not saying Ai Ai is not deserving of the award but how can Jennylyn not be nominated at all? Hindi ba siya as deserving as Ai Ai? Disappointing!”

Edwin Lacierda, the chairman of the MMFF Board of Jurors, said he was happy and satisfied with the selection of winners.

“Yes. The members of the board of judges came from different sectors part of them mostly from the film industry. It was chosen based from the appreciation of each member. I think the process was very democratic, so it seems like the public also is in agreement with the choices of the winners,” Lacierda said.

He also added that the results of the awards night were based on the assessment of the board of jurors.

Aside from Lacierda, other members of the board of jurors include Butch Francsico, Ricardo Tropeo, Deedee Sytangco, Robert Arevalo, Emmanuel Borlaza, May Paner, Maria Baby Villegas, Arnold Cabaluna, who is a public school teacher from Mandaluyong City, Justin Binos, a student from Makati City, and Newton Medina, a bus driver from Muntinlupa City.

It will be recalled that in the 2006 MMFF, a similar controversy happened. Enteng Kabisote 3 bested Star Cinema’s Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo for Best Picture. When Malou Santos, producer of Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo accepted the 2nd Best Picture award for their entry, she’s a little disappointed and stated in her speech that she believes KKK is THE best picture.

The MMFF organizers explained that part of the criteria in selecting the Best Picture was the box-office success of the film that’s why Enteng Kabisote 3 won. The Vic Sotto starrer was the top-grossing film on the first week of MMFF that year. However after the awards night and upon completion of the MMFF screening, KKK has outgrossed Enteng Kabisote 3. No changes happened for the Best Picture winner though.

  5. Napanood ko ang Tanging Ina Last Na ‘To. Maganda talaga ang movie kaya napanalunan nila ang best picture.

  8. rosario is a true story.. hindi maganda ang pagkadala ni jen sa role that’s why she was not nominated.. ganun lang ka simple!! cguro kung about sa best picture, dapat cguro na na-nominate ang rosario dahil maganda naman talaga ang movie tsaka dapat rin nominated c albert martinez for best director.. ang tanong, bakit nominated c marian rivera??

pero bout the acting of jenelyn mercado honestly alang datin kung ako mag mamimili ng nominated for best actress

it should be like this ang rangking

    1. ai ai
    2. kris aquino
    3. shaina magdayao
    4.carla abellana
    5. jenelyn

  16. kapamilyakapuso // December 28, 2010 at 10:35 am //

  17. ARVIN HILARIO // December 28, 2010 at 10:31 am //

WE ALREADY WATCH ALL THE 8 films kasi may passes kami for mmff

    1. Tanging INa – well deserve maganda lahat ng element nandun kakaiyak kakatawa and all of the 3 tanging ina ito talaga ang angat ..

    may kulang ba
and take note ung make up nila grabe ang pangit

    8. Super Inday – for me ala lang one of the Corniest movie i watch ..

  18. I also thought Rosario was good.. But when I saw it yesterday, I was little disappointed….

    1. The film was obviously compromised by the director Martinez for trying to save the film for a PG-13 rating… So yung storyline which was supposed to be really good naging bland for me…

    2. Even though commendable yung production design and everything, the costume designs were not accurate.. I just spoke to my UPFI professor and he told me that it was not the clothes of that ere.. It was over the top daw and it looked like 1950’s America… Not the Philippine fashion of that Philippine era… So very inaccurate..

    3. Seeing the trailer, this should have a good story right, but yun nga, there were lots of obvious compromise…. Sayang talaga… I don’t think pang awrads siya sa ibang bansa… Walang sinabi tong Rosario sa TATARIN.. Which was a very well made period film…

  19. Mga Bitterness jan // December 28, 2010 at 10:28 am //

Hey…wag n kc kaung mag inarte jan.. I think it’s fair naman.. as mmda stated.. judges were from different sectors and chose according to their own taste. Tanging ina just got the most number of votes…but this wont’happen naman s FAMAS kc parang Oscar awards yun no…pag bigyan nyo na.. pasko naman.. i am sure sa FAMAS.. maraming award makukuha ng Rosario…I’ve watched it already.. pero na bore po ako…:(

  20. Well rosario, ang tanging ina mo, and rpg are the best movies this year……
    At pang International!!!!!

  21. Sige cinemabuhay! Gumawa kayo sariling award giving body! Go!

  22. Masyado kase nag expect team rosario..

  23. Jen deserves atleast to be nominated

  24. yesss. ai ai deserve the title but jennylyn should be nominated atleast….

But Ai-ai deserves d award. Ang pinaka questionable lang ay ung inclusion nina Carla & Marian instead of Jen or Kris.

  29. isa pa, makontento na sana ang rosario sa 2nd best picture, at least may award sila..

  30. nice nga ang storyline ng Rosario kasi nga true story siya but speaking of magaling.. malamya naman umarte si Jennelyn.. nakakaantok! si Ai-ai, nakakabuhay ng katawang lupa.. sorry but I think deserving lang lahat ng nanalo.. wag na umepal ang rosario..

  31. kapupo mo. // December 28, 2010 at 9:14 am //

I agree that Jen should be nominated man lang…but ai ai is really deserving sa award..well, the decision of the board of judges is final. congrats star cinema :-*

  32. For Aiai best actress: I totally agree with you. Malamya si Jen when a certain requires her to be aggressive, feisty, and flirty. Walang anghang. Masyadong nagfocus ang movie sa technical aspects. Nakalimutan yung script and acting. Si Sid lang ang standout dun. The rest acting na acting. Si Isabel Oli, kasing lamya ni Jen. I know Marian fits well sa Super Inday and heard good reviews for Carla sa SRR. Sayang ang material, could have been given to a seasoned actress and an experienced director like Chito Roño.

  33. ‘m sorry to say this but I think MMFF is the least reliable award giving body..most of their winners are very questionable..was able to watch ROSARIO and it was indeed an excellent movie..Jennylyn Mercado gave a superb portrayal as well as the other actors in the movie..Albert Martinez did a great job with the movie…ROSARIO should have been given more recognition than what they received from the MMFF committee..SO DISAPPOINTING MMFF!!
    🙁

  34. according to butch, jennylyn doesn’t know how to hold a cigarrete…. haha… nakakatawa tong baklang toh… bakit naninigarilyo ba sya para malaman nya kung pano humawak. wow..
Rosario is a one of a king movie. jennylyns performance was AWESOME!

  35. jennylyn portrayed the role pretty well.
she should atleast be nominated… and she has big chance of winning!

  36. For Serious: i was explaining why Rosario is not the best. Metanoia is my best choice. It doesn’t mean na you are part of a good movie you’ll win best actress. In the 80’s in Marilou Diaz Abaya’s Karnal, everyone won except for its lead actress. Its not all about the technical aspects. It starts with a good script, well controlled director, and superb acting. Xenxa, but Jen is so hilaw for the role. Or should we blame the director? Persönally, I think Claudine will best fit the role.

  37. aiai best actress // December 28, 2010 at 8:50 am //

    quote:

Why was Jennylyn Mercado not nominated for Best Actress?

The part of Rosario is a role of a lifetime. It is a difficult one that called for a long preparation and a series of workshops. That required her to look coquettish and flirtatious. The judges didn’t see that on screen. For heaven’s sake, she doesn’t even know how to hold a cigarette — when the character is supposed to be ahead of her time and one who smokes and smokes like it’s second nature to her character.

  38. napanuod ko na rosario.
i must admit jennylyn’s performance was extravagance!
    dalang dala nya yung character.
    deserve nyang manominate.

  39. rip off ng atonement ang rosario. and the syle is very reminiscent of the thai film jan dara. naku tigilan ako.

jennylyns acting was overrrr galing. As In… bakit hindi sya nanominate??? hayyyy
    unfair talga.

  43. MMFF= unfair // December 28, 2010 at 8:25 am //

she has a big chance of winning just like ai-ai…
    rosario is a masterpiece!

  48. in my opinion, tama nmn ung decision ng MMFF, ska dba may regular n tao din n nagjudge not only them.
i actually, watched both of them, c aiai she deserves it. kase mas mhirap kayang magpatawa kesa magpaiyak..and in the movie nagwa nya un prehas. ung rosario, mgnda pero ung mga linya dun prng waley minsan.
