‘Suntok Ginto’ Aims for First Olympic Gold Medal for the Philippines

"Suntok Ginto" is an advocacy to help the Philippines win its first Olympic gold in boxing.

Among Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines is known to win the first ever Olympic medal in the region. In the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, our country brought home a BRONZE! Not just one. Not just two but three bronze medals!

It was Indonesia, however, which brought the first every Olympic Gold medal for Southeast Asia. In the 1992 Barcelona Games, the said country won two gold medals – one in men and one in women’s badminton.

Thailand, on the other hand, won their first gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Actually they won three that year – 1 in boxing and 2 in women’s weightlifting.

The Philippines almost won the gold medal in 1964 Tokyo Games when Anthony Villanueva settled for silver in boxing. We almost won the gold again in 1996 Atlanta Games when Mansueto Velasco bagged the silver medal. We have not won a single gold medal since we started participating in the Olympics in 1924.

In this light that the advocacy “Suntok Ginto” was born. To raise awareness & support for Philippine amateur boxing and the ABAP National Team in preparation and training for the Olympic games to win the first Filipino Olympic gold medal.

ABAP believes that with everyone’s help and support for our boxers, winning an Olympic gold medal will no longer be just a dream. We can shore up the fighting chances of our boxers and prove to the world that the Philippines is a formidable contender in boxing.

Our athletes are now preparing for the 2012 London Olympic Games and it could be the year that we will finally win our first Olympic gold medal.
