Indie Film ‘Donor’ Wins Best Film in Brussels International Filmfest
It’s a double victory for the Philippines in the recently concluded 37th Brussels Film Festival.
“Donor”, a Cinemalaya entry by Mark Meily, has just won Best Film while Meryll Soriano received the best actress award for her role in the film.
“Thank you very much to the jury and to the organization of Brussels International Film Festival. I’m so proud to be part of this and I’m very honored and I would like to congratulate the whole film ‘Donor’ and to congratulate all the films included in this festival,” she said in her acceptance speech.
Here is the plot of Donor:
In her desire to work abroad and leave her live-in partner Danny (Baron Geisler), Lizette (Meryll Soriano) volunteers to sell her kidney to an Arab patient to raise funds. When a law was passed banning transplants between Filipinos and foreigners ,she decides to marry the Arab patient, a man she barely knows, for the transplant to take place.
Meanwhile, Cannes’ Best Director winner–Brillante Mendoza–received a Visionary Award from BIFF for his innovation and countless contribution to independent films.
