‘Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino’ Makes It to Cinema Scope’s Top 10 Films of the Decade

The 10-hour epic "Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino" by our very own Lav Diaz was picked by international film magazine Cinema Scope as one of the Top 10 Films of the Decade.


The Top 10 movies which came from various countries around the world were chosen by leading filmmakers, critics and festival programmers according to Mark Peranson, the editor of the Toronto-based magazine.

Variety describes the film as an intimate epic made with uncompromising and austere seriousness and that it patiently and methodically observes the collapse and hopeful revival of a poor farming clan, meant to symbolize a nation’s history spanning 1971 to 1987. Ten-hour running time, radically slow pace and hyperminimalist mise en scene will excite international cinephiles at the most daring fests and showcases, which are the only conceivable venues outside of homevid.

Honourable mentions include Colossal Youth (Pedro Costa, 2006); The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (Cristi Puiu, 2005); In the City of Sylvia (José Luis Guerín, 2007); L’intrus (Claire Denis, 2004); Three Times (Hou Hsiao-hsien, 2005); Syndromes and a Century (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2006).

Incidentally, “Ebolusyon” is also among the All-Time Top 10 Longest Films by Running Time. By virtue of its 643 minutes running time, the Filipino film currently ranks fifth in the list. His other work, “Death in the Land of Encantos,” ranks 8th.
