According to the Mayan prophecy and some UFO theorists, something devastating is expected to take place on December 21, 2012 when natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, typhoons, tornadoes, floods and glaciers will happen. It merely marks a change in history, the completion of the 13th B’ak’tun cycle. We either go to the next level or spiral into obscurity and extinction. This is why their calendar ends on that fateful date.
The New Age Movement perceives this year as mankind’s spiritual transformation or total devastation. Some Christians believe this is the Apocalypse written in the book of Revelation of the Holy Bible. Add to that the prediction of French Seer Nostradamus where he forecasted that a rather large comet would rudely arrive on Earth’s doorstep no later than 2012. Even the Roman Catholic Saint Malachy predicted that in 2012, the last Pope would arrive (i guess he’s black), triggering Judgment Day.
This is how interesting, mysterious and spooky the year 2012 that Hollywood has 3 movies in the line up with 3 different takes on the matter.
The First one is 2012: Doomsday. This is the Christian version in the tradition of End of Days films like “The Omega Code” and “Left Behind” trilogy. Although they believe that there’s no particular day for the Apocalypse, as the Bible said this day will come like a thief in the night, they joined the 2012 craze and used the opportunity to hit the iron while it’s hot and instill what the Bible says about the end of the world. The movie, by the way, is an indie film.
The second movie is called 2012: The War of Souls. This is a film adaptation of the book by Whitley Streiber with the same title. Transformers director Michael Bay is at the helm of this Warner Brothers production so we can expect that it’s going to be big.
The gist of 2012: The War of Souls will focus on an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to stop an apocalypse foreseen by the ancient Mayans. The film is scheduled for a 2010 release.
The third movie is simply called 2012. The Paramount version is more of an action adventure about a family who goes on vacation in December 2012, just as the Mayan calendar is coming to a close. The film will star John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson. It’s written and directed by Roland Emmerich and will hit the theaters on July 10, 2009.
