Video Review: Speedway Junky (2001)

The main character in this film is Johnny (Jesse Bradford), a 19-year-old who runs away from home to go to North Carolina to be a speedway racer. He ends up in Las Vegas, broke and with all his belongings stolen by thugs. He meets Eric (Jordan Brower), who introduces him to the rest of his hustling and street friends. Among one of them is Steven (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), a self-proclaimed hustler for both men and women. Eric, on the other hand, does only guys. He falls head over heel for the straight Johnny, which leads to complications. Daryl Hannah plays Veronica, Eric's mother figure.

Although Bradford and Thomas are the more popular teen stars, the movie belongs to Jordan Brower. He captivated the audience with his silent sincerity.

Speedway Junky is a poignant film with unconditional love as its theme. Some might call it the “Brokeback Mountain” for teens but it’s not about gay love or man to man romance, it’s about unconditional love in general without prejudice.

Rating: 7 out of 10.
